At my sewing group today I was told that one of the previous inhabitants of this house, a vicar's wife, had said that it had been so cold that the hot water bottles were frozen by morning. I guess that must have been one which had fallen out of bed onto the floor in the early hours. Or maybe she was joking.
When I got into my car this morning the steering wheel was so cold. It has made me find a pair of gloves to use just for driving in winter.
Sainsbury's has a big display of snow shovels by the till, that made me check the weather forecast when I got home. I have an industrial sized one in the garage ready for any storm.
Even my knitting needles were cold when I picked them up a few minutes ago. That's not right.

Polar bear on my desk
I brought home a mother and a baby polar bear a couple of weeks ago. They were instantly adopted by T and H. The big one has been sitting at the table with us and just now is taking up all the space on my desk in the kitchen.
It is nearly time for me to start really creating mid winter chaos. I will shift my piles of paperwork and "stuff" to make way for my parents' visit tomorrow. Then more stuff will be shifted out of the way to allow for the cards to be displayed. All the laundry needs to be hidden too. My parents are shocked at clothes drying in our kitchen, so I hide it all.
H would like the drawing room to be a Christmas room and I like the idea of us each having our own tree to decorate.
It feels as if it might snow, the sky was an eerie grey and there was just-about-sleet on the car windscreen earlier. My hands are about to get all dry and my hair will be full of static. Time to feed the birds and put water out for them.
We have just moved the bear back to his place at the head of the table. He needed a coat so T and I put his furry arms in the arm holes and did up the zip. Very cute!
S has some books for his team, so it looks as if he is starting his own book group!

Bubble wrap helps
We have windows with industrial drafts blowing in from them. The shutters and full-length curtains aren't helping that much. Even though they are shut 100% of the time, it is still far too cold in some rooms, even though the heating is on a lot.
So I thought and thought until I hit on a way of putting strips of bubble wrap along the cracks where the wind blows in. I have used loads of sellotape and was careful to rub nail varnish remover on the paintwork and glass first so the tape would stick. I am so pleased. I no longer have to keep the doors shut to these 2 rooms to prevent the cold coming into the rest of the house.
I put some tinsel along the insulation strips too for good measure, although it is somewhat pointless given that I then shut the shutters and curtains again so we are all sealed up snugly until May time.

Cold Nose
I want a veil/covering for at night when my nose is actually cold. I laughed at those knitted nose warmers someone had created, but I'm not laughing now!
Right now my fingers are cold too, and my shoulders. It is not a problem because all I have to do is wander over to the super warm kitchen. How lucky are we?

Snow times
I have been having a think about how it has been with all this snow since last Tuesday night. It's only been 9 days, yet feels like forever.
My conclusion is that it's the waiting which is so different from usual. I had been waiting for the snow to start, waiting for it to stop, waiting for the next weather forecast etc.
I have also felt surprised that the snow is still there each time I go outdoors. When we were inside I would forget that life has not been normal, then I would go down to the road and be amazed again at the expanse of perfect packed snow from invisible kerb to invisible kerb.
We forgot which day it was and had to check!
There was a lot of TV to watch and books to read. Once the decision had been made that there was no school or whatever, then the rest of the day was for keeping warm and feeding the birds. I kept on going out for walks round the village to post one letter at a time! Stuart kept on going for runs. T kept on going out to take photos and H kept busy indoors. We each have our own ways of dealing with it.

Advent Calendar 22 - Snow All Around
Mmm, it is just lovely in our village. I walked round in the evening so I could post some cards to my family.
The bend in the road by the Cross was covered in ice.The dog drinking bowl outside our pub was frozen over. Earlier in the day I did some stone bashing and boiling water tipping to break thick ice for the birds.
There is such a sense of peace and quiet. It is literally a silent night out there.
Obviously there is anxiety at the risks of falling over and of finding ourselves needing to drive and having problems, but for the moment we are stocked up with essentials and some very non-essential extras!!
