Congratulations to myself! Mazel tov biani wa mabrukni - old draft post
I have written out the Hebrew alphabet for the first time from end to end from memory. It took having a bath with the text book a pen and a sheet of paper to crack the final elusive 6. They were towards the end, but not the final 4.
So, a week well spent. I walk down the street gazing into the middle distance writing them out with my right hand, imperceptibly, as I go along.
A few days ago I woke in the dead of night and instantly started to speak my 4 phrases to myself in my mind:
bivikashah
todah
eriv tov
leila tov
Then of course I began to create very short Arabic phrases describing what I was doing. What is the name for this switching from asleep to active thinking? Seriously, I woke and went straight into the words! I didn't move a muscle. All going on in my head.

أنا أتزلج اليوم - ?מה שלומך? - دبكة - منطق الطیر
أتزلج اليوم
في الأول أنا اقدر على الجدار, ثم أنا أتزلج بنفسي على بعد أمتار قليلة, وأنا أتعلم للتزلج أسرع. وأنا أسقط وأجرح ركبتي ويديني أيضا, ولكن أحب التزلج.
Corrected: في الأول أنا اقدر على الجدار, ثم أنا أتزلج بنفسي على لأمتار قليلة, وأنا أتعلم التزلج بسرعة. أنا أسقط وأجرح ركبتي ويدي أيضا, ولكن أحب التزلج.

على لأمتار قليلة - for a few metres

ويدي - my hands, ?? that's not plural, I want the plural?? never mind...
More corrections: في بداية الأمر كنت استند الى الجدار كل الوقت , لكن لاحقا استطعت أن أتزلج لوحدي لبضعة أمتار. بعدها تعلمت أن أتزلج بشكل أسرع ولكنني سقطت مرة واحدة على ركبتي ويديي على سطح الجليد الأملس و القاسي. على الرغم من كل ذلك أنا أحب التزلج وساذهب مرة اخرى.

الكتب إسمه ’منطق الطیر’ أو ’مقامات الطیور’, والكاتبه إسمه فرید الدین أو عطار أو ابو حامد بن ابوبکر ابراهیم. قرأت المقدمة وقصة صغيرة عن الشيخ والبنت أيضا.

في هذا الفيلم هناك الرقص الدبكة, إنه قليلا مثل درسي الرقص في مهرجان لحقوق الإنسان الأسبوع الماضي في جامعة أكسفورد بروكس

في هذا الفيلم رقص الدبكة - 'There is Dabke in this film' - of course, no need for the extra words, the invisible Arabic 'is' does all the work
يشبه - ?
مهرجان حقوق الإنسان - 'Festival of Human Rights' - idaafa within an idaafa, so alif lam only arrives at the end.

The Interpreter's House - Newspaper/Passive/2
Launch of issue 59 of The Interpreter's House
These names jumped out at me:
Andrey Ardern-Jones - (poem about plucking at the buttercups on the sheets)
Nancy Campbell - (poems about Greenland)
James Caruth - (poem about his grandfather, including the OT quotation)
Anas Hassan - The Front Row
Michelle D. Lauder - Lances
Mostly I looked carefully, but sometimes I looked at the floor to listen better.
With one poet I had to shut my eyes, to simply listen. Have I done that before? Who was it?
A friend and I took a very long way round to get back to our cars, so we could talk the more.
I needed to sit down on a low wall so I could tell her about the line I loved the best, God is my hiding place and about his gentle accent.
That phrase is from the OT, in translation of course, none of us know Hebrew, but it's that close to us here in English, bathed in the words of the Old Testament in all those different translations.
Newspaper/Passive/2
Earlier H saw a photo of Princes Diana on the back of my very old Arabic newspaper. Amazingly he listened when I showed him the letters of 'Diana' and spoke the words al-amiira diiana, he and I repeated this again and again, getting the emphasis in the right and wrong places! I don't know how Diana is pronounced in Arabic, so was at sea there.
How exciting, I chanced on a couple of lines about the vowels u and i which make the passive. I had no expectation of actually learning it. Then I saw a passive in a translated book title in a poetry prize review. Then... I realised that wulidtu uses exactly those vowels (I was born), so I half know it already :)
Taking no chances, I have booked for 2 different Arabic classes this autumn. They can't both fall through. One requires an assessment. Will I have to go and talk to them? I hope so.
